Lesbian-gay band to strike up in Cleveland

by Doreen Cudnik

June 17, 1995, Pride Day in Nashville, Tennessee, is a day that Jon Dallas remembers fondly.

"This day was significant in my lifelong coming-out process because it was my first Pride Day ever," said Dallas. "I made every effort to be as conservative as possible, hoping that no one would see or recognize me. That notion lasted maybe ten minutes when I spotted the high-stepping Pride of Peachtree Marching Band from Atlanta. I was so amazed to find out that this marching band was all lesbian and gay that I was immediately drawn to it like a bee to honey."

Dallas, who drum majored in high school as well as at Ohio State University, has plans to start a similar community band in Cleveland, with the help of the Lesbian and Gay Bands of America. Dallas believes that forming a lesbian and gay marching band in Cleveland will “positively add to the continued understanding of Cleveland's rich and diverse cultures as well as acting as 'musical ambassadors' of the gay and lesbian community."

If you can imagine leading the next Cleveland Pride March as a member of an all lesbian and gay marching band, plan to at-

tend the next organizational meeting on Sunday, April 21 at the Cleveland Lesbian and Gay Center, 1418 W. 29th Street at Detroit Ave. The meeting begins at 1:00 and all musical levels and abilities are welcome. It is

not necessary to bring a musical instrument to this meeting. Call 216-232-7281 for more information.

'Ex-gay' Web site

With so much gay and lesbian content to be found on the Internet, one would assume that a site calling itself "Stonewall Revisited," complete with a lavender backdrop and rainbow flag design, would be an affirming place for gay and lesbian net surfers. But be warned, this site is an ex-gay ministry sponsored by a group called "Leadership U." According to the pro-gay Beacon Ministries in Columbus, the site is very anti-gay and features personal pages where you can read a number of stories from "former" homosexuals. The site states that their goal is to "offer social, ethical and spiritual alternatives to students and faculty in colleges and universities all across America," and said, “We offer the personal stories of people who have found a more fulfilling life outside homosexuality."

Beacon Ministries issued a statement saying, "These groups are homophobic in nature and only destroy, not save, lives." This fall, Beacon plans to publish a study of these types of groups-who they are and what impact they are having on the gay lesbian

bisexual and transgender community. Beacon Ministries can be reached by writing to P.O. Box 10814, Columbus, 43201, or by fax at 614-299-4408.

Bring gay TV to Toledo

In the Life, the nationally broadcast magazine show about lesbian bisexual transgender and gay culture, issues and personalities is now in its fourth season. Never before in the forty-year history of television broadcasting has there been a regularly scheduled series on mainstream television devoted exclusively to broadcasting the diversity and accomplishments of lesbian, bisexual, transgender and gay Americans. The show is funded through viewer support and grant funding, allowing stations to run the program at no

cost.

A grass roots effort is underway to get the show aired in Northwest Ohio, which includes Bowling Green and Toledo. Julia Marie Wedemeyer has been leading the charge, doing presentations in support of In the Life and encouraging others in the area to call or write PBS stations WBGU Channel 27 in Bowling Green, and WGTE Channel 30 in Toledo, to express support of In the Life.

To reach either station, call or write: Ron Garasz, Program Manager, WBGU-TV, 245 Troup Street, Bowling Green 43403, 419372-2700; or John Gibson, Program Manager, WGTE-TV, 136 North Huron, Toledo 43697, 419-243-3091.

Religion and sexuality forum

Religious leaders, clergy and educators representing a variety of denominations will gather in Columbus next Friday, April 12, to find common ground between conflicting views about human sexuality and religious faith.

The forum, called Searching for Common Ground, recognizes that religious communities today are torn over how to deal with lesbians, gays, and bisexuals as they become more open about their sexuality.

Leading the forum will be Howard Bess, the author of Pastor, I am Gay; Dr. Edgar Towne, a professor of theology and the author of many scholarly papers and articles about Biblical theology and homosexuality; and Ken Prunty, the father of a gay son and an active member of P-FLAG.

The forum will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 12 at the Broad Street Presbyterian Church, 760 East Broad Street, in Columbus. The cost $60; students may at-

tend for $25 per person. For more information or to register, contact Earl or Patty Todt, P.O. Box 09617, Columbus 43209, or call 614-231-4385.
